Syracuse Board Gamers

Why Not Play A Game ? ? ?

Welcome to the brief information page for the Syracuse Board Gamers. The goal of this page is to provide a little information about the group and direct you to our Yahoo group/discussion board.

We meet Tuesday nights from 5-9:00 pm at "Cloud City Comics" They are located in the Shoppingtown Mall, Syracuse NY. Phone (315) 449-0003…

Even if you cant arrive right at 5p; you'll just join in when a new game begins or enough people appear to start a new group. Food and drink are allowed, but please be respectful of the games.

We have a Yahoo Group at....

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/Tues_Night_Gaming/

This is used for official announcements, discussion of games and most importantly scheduling.  The biggest advantage of joining the group is that 2 to 3 days before we play we send out a “call for match ups”.  Once a day until we play the call is updated and sent out.  This facilitates quick starts to the games coordinated during the call for match ups.

Membership in the Yahoo group is not a requirement to play on Tuesday nights.

What Types Of Games Do We Play ? ? ?

The simple answer is with some exceptions just about all types. Many of the games we play can be broken out into the following categories.

One such category would be Eurogames such as “Settlers of Catan”, “El Grande”, “Puerto Rico”, “Power Grid”, “Ticket to Ride”, “Leaping Lemmings”, etc.

Another category of games would be light strategy or sometimes referred to as wargames.  These include “Risk”, “Axis & Allies”, “Battlelore”, “Wings of War”, etc.

The next category up the chain would be medium complexity strategy or wargames.  These include “Memoir ’44”, “Battle Cry”, “Command & Colors”, etc.

At the top of this list would be the complex strategy or wargames like “Advanced Squad Leader”.

The subjects are many, historical, fantasy, sci fi, tactical, strategic, abstract and on and on.

Even more traditional games like Mah Jongg, Bridge, GO or Scrabble, bring it along and see if anyone's interested.

We don't venture into roleplaying games or collectable card games. We do however play non-collectable card games like “Munchkin”.  The goal is to have a few hours a week to let your mind explore different puzzles and situations.

Also Play the Game Read the Story has an extensive collection of games that they loan out for play.

Why have I never heard of these games ? ? ?

The origins of strategy wargaming and Eurogames dates back to the late 1950’s.  Because they generally aren’t sold in the chain toy stores they aren’t reaching the mass market.  These types of games are sold through stores like Cloud City Comics.

What makes these games different ? ? ?

When most people think about board games, they think about Monopoly and the never ending rolling and moving..and waiting for hours for the thing to end. These games are different in the following ways:

They have a fixed ending point, and anywhere from 1 to 4 hours (less once you learn the games).

There are mechanisms to keep you involved in the game when it is not your turn (such as trading, backstabbing, negotiating, etc).

Luck plays a much lower factor; however, there usually is a little luck involved.

They are more complex, and you should plan on not worrying about winning the first game - just get a handle on how the game works.

What can I expect ? ? ?

If you arrive around 5pm, you'll probably be able to join in one of the first games of the night. Or if you’ve participated in the “call for match ups” you’ll already have a game lined up. There is ample table space for more games to expand. If you arrive after 5p, then you'll wait around for the current game to end or wait for a few others to come and start playing. You can bring games that you have, or play along with club members.

How can I learn more ? ? ?

Just show up! But, if you'd like to read more before you come, there are many sites on the wed that relate to our hobby.  Click on one of the graphics to the left to visit their site.
